Turning Compassion into Action: Celebrating Red Cross Month
This March, we celebrate Red Cross Month by recognizing the volunteers and teams who support the American Red Cross in its lifesaving mission to prevent and alleviate human suffering. Since its founding in 1881, the American Red Cross has worked tirelessly to help communities in times of crisis, providing disaster relief, supplying 40% of the nation’s blood, teaching life-saving skills, delivering international aid, and supporting veterans and military families.
A Strong Partnership with Lasting Impact
Since its founding in 1949, Ford Philanthropy has supported the Red Cross through disaster relief efforts, employee blood drives, and contributions. Today, through the Annual Disaster Giving Program, Ford Philanthropy helps ensure the Red Cross has the resources to respond to emergencies across the country year-round. In 2025, we will continue our commitment with ongoing funding and by supporting Ford Volunteer Corps- and dealership-led blood drives and preparedness workshops in select U.S. markets.
A Heritage Built on Mobility
Mobility, a key focus of Ford Philanthropy today, was strongly rooted in the partnership from the beginning. In the early 1900s Ford designed and delivered Model T-based ambulances for use in World War I. During World War II, Ford hosted blood drives, supplied vehicles for the Red Cross Motor Corps, and trained women volunteers in auto maintenance to transport wounded soldiers and deliver critical supplies. By the end of the war, 45,000 women had volunteered for the Red Cross Motor Corps, driving 41 million miles to support the effort.
