Celebrate Black History Month with Ford Philanthropy Partners

This February, we honor the achievements of African Americans and their essential role in U.S. history with the annual kick-off of Black History Month. What began as a week-long observance in 1976 has evolved into a month of reflection, celebration, and action.

 

Throughout the month, Ford Philanthropy partner organizations are hosting events and initiatives to celebrate Black history. This year's theme, African Americans and Labor, highlights the impact of work on the collective experiences of Black people. Explore the many ways to get involved:

 

  • Live Events
    • Tinkering for Tots (Feb. 11) – MLK Jr. storytelling and play.
    • TeMaTe Institute (Feb. 15) – Drum and dance performance.
    • Michigan Krump Movement (Feb. 15) – A deep dive into Krumping.
    • Marygrove & Randolph Twins (Feb. 16) – Dance and classical music performances.
  • Exhibits
    • With Liberty and Justice for All – Featuring the Rosa Parks Bus.
    • Story Stroll – Discover the legacy of fashion icon Zelda Wynn Valdes.
    • E-q-u-a-l-i-t-y (daily at 10 a.m.-noon) – Learn about MacNolia Cox, an early Black Spelling Bee competitor.
    • 60th Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act (Opens Feb. 22).
    • Reframing History: Uncovering Black Stories – A new daily tour explores Black history through major artifacts, with a special experience (daily at 1 p.m.).

Join the Detroit Institute of Arts for performances, film screenings, and family activities celebrating Black culture and creativity. All events are free with museum admission:

  • 32nd Annual Alain Locke Awards (Feb. 16) – Honoring artist Titus Kaphar.
  • Steppers Ball (Feb. 23) – Dance event.
  • Guest Artist Workshop (Feb. 24) – Featuring Jonathan Kimble.
